Four Top Tips to Reduce Your Household Energy Bills

With energy prices constantly rising, you might be looking for ways to reduce your energy use at home. Appliances are among the biggest energy users in your household, so optimising your use of these can save you money in the long run.

Here’s four top tips to reduce your household energy bills.

Choose the most efficient appliances

When you’re investing in a new appliance, you should factor efficiency into your decision. Every appliance has an energy label with a rating from A to G, with G being the least efficient. This rating tells you how much energy the appliance uses in a typical use.

Typically, the larger the appliance, the lower the efficiency. It’s best to check the efficiency of appliances in the size you require, then choose your model with the best energy efficiency label.

Don’t choose a bigger appliance than you need. If you don’t store much frozen food, for example, paying to power a large freezer will be a waste of energy and money.

Regularly service your appliances

Your appliances should be serviced every year to ensure maximum efficiency. A service will identify any faults in your appliance that are wasting energy, such as a leak or malfunctioning motor.

The engineer will also catch any problems early that have the potential to cause an expensive problem further down the line, saving you a costly repair and possibly even an appliance replacement.

Switch your appliance off at the plug

When your appliance is not in use, you should switch it off at the wall, either by flicking the switch or unplugging it. Even when your appliance is in standby mode, it can still use energy. Did you know that your microwave uses more power on standby than it does when heating food? This is because the clock is always running.

Over a period of time, this wasted energy can add up and increase your annual energy bill by a considerable amount.

Save up washing and dishes

It’s inefficient to use your dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer when they aren’t fully loaded. You should wait until you have a full load of washing or dirty dishes before starting a cycle.

However, you shouldn’t load it over capacity as this can cause damage to your machine.
Washing your dishes and clothes on a lower temperature cycle will also save on your energy bills.
