How to Clean Your Dishwasher Properly
You might think dishwashers clean themselves, but like washing machines, they require regular cleaning to keep them functioning properly. If you let your dishwasher go uncleaned for a long period of time, there will be a build-up of gunk and residual food. This can cause long-term problems with drainage, odours and leaking.
Here’s how to properly give your dishwasher a deep clean.
Clean the dishwasher filter
The filter is the most important part of your dishwasher to keep clean. If your filter is dirty, the rest of your dishwasher will be too. You need to remove the filter from the dishwasher and rinse it with hot water.
Then, using a soft brush or toothbrush, scrub the filter’s mesh, being sure to remove any food or grime left in the filter. Don’t use a wire brush or scourer pad as these may damage the filter. Rinse it clean again using hot water.
You should also clean around the filter inside of the dishwater using a cloth and warm, soapy water.
Clean the interiors
Using a cloth and warm soapy water, wipe down the interiors of the dishwasher. This is easier to do with both racks removed. You should also thoroughly wipe the door seal – a build-up of gunk in here can result in a bad odour.
Clean the exterior
Don’t forget to clean the outside of your dishwasher, too. Wipe down the front of the door when you clean the rest of your kitchen cupboards. If your dishwasher has a stainless steel front, it’s best to use a specialised cleaning product to remove smears.
How often does your dishwasher need cleaning?
Your dishwasher should only need a deep clean once a month. However, on a weekly basis you should clean out the filter, wipe down interior door and clean the door seal.
If your dishwasher drain is blocked, you should seek professional help as this can be tricky and there is a risk of flooding if it is not carried out properly.
