A Guide to Different Types of Tumble Dryers

Buying a tumble dryer can be more complex than you’d first imagine. With an ever-increasing range of sizes, models and types of dryers on the market, the choice can be overwhelming.

In this article, we explore the different types of tumble dryer available to help you choose the right model.

Vented tumble dryers

There are two main types of tumble dryer: vented and condenser. Vented tumble dryers are often the cheaper options on the market.

Vented tumble dryers work by removing the damp air from the dryer through a hose. You’ll need to have vent fitted to allow moisture to escape outside, or a window that the hose can fit through.

When a vented dryer is not in use, the hose can be compacted to save space.

Condenser tumble dryers

Unlike vented tumble dryers, condenser tumble dryers can be placed anywhere in your home. Water collects from clothes in a container, rather than needing to be released by a tube. The container needs emptying regularly to keep it working at maximum efficiency.

The room you place your condenser tumble dryer in must be well ventilated, but a vent in your wall or ceiling isn’t essential.

More advanced condenser tumble dryers use washing machine plumbing to remove excess water via a pump. This means you won’t need to empty your water container.

Heat pump tumble dryers

Heat pump tumble dryers are a more efficient type of machine. These dryers reuse warm air from the drying process to save energy.

Automatic tumble dryers

Automatic tumble dryers boast innovative sensor technology to identify when clothes are dry. This means there’s no need to set a timer – the dryer will stop automatically when clothes are dry.

Manual tumble dryers

Unlike automatic tumble dryers, manual tumble dryers use a timer to know when to stop. You’ll select a cycle length when you load in your clothes.
